Raising awareness about breast cancer,  in particular in young women, is so important to me. 1 in 8 women* will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. There is growing evidence that the number of young women being diagnosed with breast cancer is increasing. Outcomes for young women are worse because we are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage, with lymph node positive disease, as I was. This is largely due to the reality that we are not eligible for routine screening in most cases, and identify our own cancers. Once in the lymphatic system cancer can return at a distant location. Distant metastasis is stage 4 breast cancer, and incurable. Being diagnosed later increases the likelihood this may happen. The Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run For The Cure has raised $493 million to fund breast cancer research projects since 1992. We have seen a 49% decrease in breast cancer mortality rates since the 1980s because of funding being directed to treatment for early stage breast cancer. But for me, Stage 4 still needs more. This is why I fundraise, for a future with a cure for all stages. As a young survivor, I care immensely about improving outcomes for those with metastatic breast cancer. I am hopeful for a future with a cure for all stages of breast cancer, and for that reason I am again participating in the CIBC Run For The Cure in Kitchener-Waterloo on October 1st 2023.
