Dragonfly vs. Damselfly Eyes: What’s the Difference? Dragonflies and damselflies are both fascinating insects, but there are a few key differences between them, one of which is their eyes. Dragonflies have huge compound eyes that meet at the top of their head. These eyes are made up of thousands of tiny lenses, called ommatidia, which give dragonflies excellent vision. Damselflies also have ommatidia, but their eyes are located at the sides of their head and do not meet. This difference in eye placement is due to the way that dragonflies and damselflies hunt. Dragonflies approach their prey from underneath, so they need to have good vision near the top of their head. Damselflies, on the other hand, approach prey directly in front of them, so they need to have good vision at the front of their eyes. If you’ve ever watched dragonflies and damselflies hunting, you might have noticed the difference in their hunting techniques.
