A scene from the 1974 Yugoslav film, “Derviš i smrt” - Death and the Dervish. This film was directed by Zdravko Velimirović based on the novel with the same name by Meša Selimović. This film was highly regarded for its cinematography and production. It was a film produced by multiple production companies in the former Yugoslavia. These being based in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo. There was also a multiethnic cast including Serbian actress Olivera Katarina, Croatian actor Boris Dvornik and Kosovar Albanian actor Faruk Begolli, just to name a few. This scene in particular depicts Usnija Redžepova, singing in Turkish. Usnija Redžepova (who had no familial relation to the great Esma Redžepova) was born in Skopje, N.Macedonia to a Romani father and a Turkish mother. She was also highly revered for her musical abilities. The music and dancers also depicted in this scene were a part of the iconic Kosovar - Albanian ensemble Shota. Note that while ethnic minorities are depicted here and it’s important to highlight their talents and artistic contributions.
