🇮🇹 The freedom of a boat…what a thrill to navigate through the waters of the Aeolian Islands as we pleased. We admired the sauvage and rocky islands facing Panarea, headed toward Salina - with its rock archway, to Lipari - water a pure turquoise and then to Stromboli! Stromboli was my favorite. From Panarea one sees Stromboli on the horizon - a mammoth sentinel keeping watch. At night, the active volcano that makes up the island spurts lava and its volcanic emissions light up the inky sky. We drove the boat to its base and watched the volcano belch and expel. We were close to creation. Just extraordinary. Stromboli’s beaches are all pure black 🖤 On our way back, the sea changed entirely. The people on the island called it a « mare bianco » and Xavier thought it looked like pure oil. It had this gelatinous and very silky quality. The sky and the horizon bled together in a haze with just the dark forms of the island lumbering in the distance.
