The recent presence of anti-trans and 2SLGBTQIA+ protests across Canada and in Kelowna are a voice of bigotry and hatefulness that are never okay. At Mamas for Mamas, we stand alongside our 2SLGBTQIA+ parents and caregivers, teens and kiddos. Our doors are always open, and especially today. If you need a safe place, a coffee or a hug– we are here for you. Always. In short, Canada recognizes international law on human rights– and so do we. We stand by Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." We stand by Article 2 as well, which elaborates that "Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration." Everyone has the right to be protected by international human rights legislation, and this includes 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Despite these laws, 2SLGBTQIA+ folks are still at disproportionate risk of hate, including physical violence– the hateful demonstrations today are evident of this. Children deserve to be supported and loved no matter what gender they are, no matter what. A healthy, happy child who feels at home in their body should be our goal. This goal outweighs any ideology intertwined with bigotry. No matter what. Education that spreads love and acceptance is not only in accordance with Canada’s recognition of international law, it creates a safe place for learners, as well as conquers discourse of hatefulness that should have no place in a classroom. All children have a right to this safety. Even in the face of this darkness, we hope folks know that there are still safe people out there. We honour and celebrate the humanity of all people at Mamas for Mamas, no matter gender or sexuality. Our doors are open. Always. #transrightsarehumanrights🌈
