“Let us make a good end…” with everyone talking about how men are think about #Rome, let’s also note how often we (and our shield-sisters) daydream about some great last stand. I think the appeal is that when you reach that decision, there are no other worries or cares to distract you, your duty is simple and action is direct. Your life, though it be short, it’s filled with purpose, clarity and camaraderie. But I do not think that we have to give our lives in a final heroic act to have all of that. Purpose and camaraderie can be found even in a quiet normal life. In fact, it may take more courage, strength and endurance to carry on cheerfully and nobly in the common things of life.
