Wallpaper Wednesday. Here, two views of a bedroom in a New York apartment, decorated by the late Arthur E. Smith, 1980. Above the sofa, upholstered in a stylized shell motif fabric that matched the wallpaper, was Robert Motherwell’s “Plato’s Case”; to the right was a sculpture by Varujan Boghosian. Carpeting was by Stark, the wall lamp by Hansen; the sofa strongly resembles one designed by Billy Baldwin, still being produced by Billy Baldwin Studio. Swipe left for another view of the room; the sketch is a study by Marcel Duchamp for his “Nude Descending a Staircase.” As mentioned here before, Mr. Smith began his career as Billy Baldwin’s assistant, later becoming a partner in the firm. He took over the firm after Mr. Baldwin retired.
