#Dominican First Lady claims there was no slavery in the DR. Not only was there absolutely brutal slavery, it was ended by Haiti TWICE. Thankfully we’ve done the homework on slavery in Hispaniola/Ayiti, and we encourage you to check out our recommended Summer Schooled series in our YouTube Channel, the First Blacks in the Americas website, and other sources in our #DecolonizingHispaniola Reading list. Repost from @inculturedco • Did you know that the #DominicanRepublic is the second country in the Americas where #slavery was abolished after Haiti? _____ Activists and a group of progressive historians in the Dominican Republic have acknowledged Feb 9th, #1822 as Abolition Day in the country. It is the historic day that #Haitian President Boyer freed the enslaved #Africans of #SantoDomingo and unified the island. Many of those enslaved people had been actively lobbying Haiti to take over the Spanish side of the island, calculating that it would be better to be free under Haiti than enslaved under Spain. The Church and the Enslavers were, of course, actively against this idea. _____ Before Boyer even unified the island, the leaders of several Dominican frontier towns, particularly Dajabón and Montecristi, adopted the Haitian flag. When Boyer declared the unification of the island and the abolition of slavery, the Palm🌴 of Liberty was planted in the Parque de Armas by Haitian troops, now Parque Colón, as a symbol of freedom and the abolition of slavery. "Within two months, a wave of Dominican support ushered in #Haiti’s president, Jean- Pierre Boyer, into the eastern capital. Boyer proclaimed #Dominican emancipation for a second time on 9 February 1822 (the first time was in 1801 by L'Ouverture) , as the colony became part of Haiti. Haitian Officials planted the Tree of Liberty less than two weeks later. The whole island was now Haiti, the only independent nation in the #Caribbean. One man later remembered Dominicans everywhere expressed solidarity with their “new fellow co- citizens,” independent at last. - source: 'We Dream Together' by Anne Eller - #blackhistorymonth
