Project Name: Texcoco Airport Location: Mexico City, Mexico Project Type: International Airport Initial Cost Estimate: $13 Billion Construction Began: 2014 Construction Stalled: 2018 % Complete: 30%   Over the last several decades, Mexico City’s airport has been getting increasingly busy… to the point that around 15 years ago, the decision was made to build a massive new airport to serve the region. The Texcoco Airport was scheduled to open in 2024 and would have a capacity double that of the previous one.   Initial estimates for the project were around $15 billion, although many suspected this figure would grow as the project progressed. Construction began on the massive project and by 2018 it was around one third compete. In 2018, the project was cancelled abruptly following the Mexican presidential election. The new president held a referendum to determine the future of the multibillion dollar project. Only around 1% of Mexico’s population took part in the vote but a majority of those who did, voted to cancel the project due to the extremely high cost as well rumors of waste and corruption.     Following the cancellation the President decreed that the site would be converted into the largest urban park in the world. The site, which is larger than some cities, would take an additional billion dollars for this change in direction. The long term goal of the project is to “return the area to nature”. Currently most of the site is fenced off and surrounded by armed guards.
