When you recognise which stage of sitting your baby is in, you can offer them play activities that will further their progress. If you’re not sure what the stages of sitting are or how to support them, we’ve got you covered. ⬇️ 1️⃣ Sitting with support (around 3 to 5 months) At first, your baby will need significant help from you. Place them in your lap or on the floor in front of you with your hands firmly on their rib cage. Provide a variety of playthings for them to grasp, mouth, and play with while they’re in this position. 2️⃣ Prop sitting (about 4 to 6 months) When your baby begins using their hands to maintain their balance, surround them with toys they’ll want to look at, not grasp. Once they start to lift one hand while seated, give them playthings to reach for, like the Spinning Rainbow. 3️⃣ Wobbly sitting (around 5 to 7 months) As your baby figures out how to balance without using their hands, sit behind them with your legs in a V shape that, along with your arms, will serve as a supportive boundary. Offer your child toys below their chest height to keep their centre of gravity low. 4️⃣ Independent sitting (about 6 to 8 months) Once your baby can sit upright on their own, place playthings all around them within their reach. This encourages them to balance while turning, twisting, and reaching in different directions. 5️⃣ Functional sitting (around 7 to 11 months) In the final stage, when your baby can transition to and from sitting without help, spread toys, books, and other playthings around the room. This will encourage them to continue practising those transitions in order to explore. Every baby progresses at their own pace; these age bands are just guidelines. Your baby primarily builds muscles for sitting by playing on their back, belly, and sides.
