Guys, let’s imagine you are planning to travel and suddenly you discover that you can’t because your car has no fuel and you have little money. What would you do? Cancel your trip, right? That is not the case with scientists and space agencies working out there. Doesn’t matter if you don’t have enough fuel carrying capacity or money. They have still sent space objects to various destinations. How? Well, one primary reason is the fancy term you just read in the first slide. This technique is an outcome of creative engineering, where we use gravity to beat gravity. Now that was the very informal intro to just excite you guys, so wanna know-how is it done? Ofc you do, that’s the reason you are reading this…. We will understand this through an example, so let’s climb on our QuantaCos rocket. Now let’s say we want to reach Mars. Still, we don’t have enough fuel capacity, so we are just gonna launch this in the outer orbit of the earth and let it gain speed. As soon as we get max speed, we are gonna use some of our own fuel to accelerate it enough to acquire escape velocity (11.2 km/s for earth) and overcome the attraction of earth’s gravity. As soon as we reach Mars, we will use Mars’s gravity to deaccelerate our space carrier. This way, we accelerated/deaccelerated as per our desire without excess fuel consumption. And guys, this is how the Slingshot works, when we use the gravity of any astronomical object to change the trajectory or velocity of any spacecraft. A practical example could be the Mangalyaan of ISRO, which was sent to Mars at a low cost through the same process. Loved this post?
