Staging Lino by @innenarchitektur_hft_stuttgart students 🧷A material-based furniture student design project with linoleum 

THE PROBLEM ✖️Historically proven materials made from natural raw materials, such as rammed earth and linoleum, have often been replaced by plastics in the past due to technical innovations. For some time now, many of these have been experiencing a veritable renaissance. But sometimes they have to be re-developed or optimized, or their potential has not been fully utilized yet. 

THE SOLUTION
In different application scenarios, the full potential of materials should be explored beyond their previous use, utilized in terms of design and based on the current state of research. Linoleum for example is more than ”just“ a floor covering and offers a wide range of design and functional features thanks to its flexible and tactile properties.   Students from the IMIAD program at @hft_stuttgart collaborated with linoleum manufacturer forbo on a material-based furniture project. This project began with a visit to forbo's production facility in Assendelft, Netherlands. The students delved into linoleum's functional properties and potential through practical experiments and methodical seminars led by material researcher Dr. Kerstin Mayer. Subsequently, their task was to create innovative applications and design furniture pieces using linoleum, optionally combined with other eco-friendly materials. The outcomes ranged from side tables to various seating options, tables, shelves, and even lamps. Prof. Karsten Weigel, Dipl.-Des. Alexander Klein (LBA), and Dipl.-Des. Melissa Acker (AM) supervised the class.
