Today we celebrate World Rhino Day and we felt it aptly suitable to revist this story about our Bongani Rhino Rescue. The Aspinall Foundation, in partnership with WILDTRUST and the Wildlife Emergency Fund, worked alongside the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) to successfully relocate three white rhinos from Bongani Mountain Lodge and the Mthethomusha Nature Reserve in Mpumalanga. The need for this rescue mission arose when the lodge was tragically burned down in arson attacks by local communities on January 31, 2021, endangering the rhinos and other wildlife. The operation unfolded in three phases: assessing the situation and locating the rhinos via helicopter, capturing the first two rhinos, and then, successfully capturing a third. The rhinos were then transferred to Care for Wild, committed to their long-term well-being until they find permanent homes. The Aspinall Foundation and its partners contributed funding, covering expenses like helicopter use, veterinary care, and equipment, while the MTPA provided a skilled capture crew, trucks, and crates. This collaboration showcases the effective synergy between NGOs and governmental agencies in critical emergency scenarios.
