Someone recently commented on one of my posts- something to the effect of, "I'd love to try painting this but if I don't get it right the first time, I'll probably give up" Not going to lie, this comment shocked me, mostly because I know the work and experience it took me to create the painting and for anyone to have an "all or nothing on the first try" attitude is disheartening. Clearly this person is a perfectionist, when really they should aspire to be a high achiever. You might be asking, "is there a difference?" The difference between a perfectionist and a high achiever is that a high achiever can be satisfied with "good enough" Perfectionists will accept nothing less than perfection. "Almost perfect" is failure. Due to this fear of failure, perfectionists tend to procrastinate more. Since anything less than perfection is a failure, it makes it difficult to get started on anything new or they give up after the first failed attempt. Perfectionists do it for the end result, not the process. They’re so concerned about meeting the goal and avoiding the dreaded failure that they can’t enjoy the process of growing and learning. Perfectionists are afraid to fail but as I keep saying, failure is good. That's when we learn the most. Paint and make mistakes because that will lead to growth and new opportunities 😊 None of the art I create is "perfect" because perfect doesn't exist and I have realistic expectations of my current ability. If I'm happy with what I've created, that's good enough for me. I'm also aware that I'm going to screw up when I try something new, but the difference is, I don't give up.
