After my post last week, several of you had messaged me asking if I can explain in more detail what is "Russian Red" resin and why is it so hard to retreat? "Russian red" resin consists of Resorcinol-formaldehyde resin and was commonly used in Russia and other post soviet countries (Eastern Europe, China) The reason why it's nicknamed "Russian red" is that clinically these teeth can often have red/pink discoloration as you see in the images and be mistaken for gross caries. It contains two potentially toxic components, formaldehyde (liquid) and resorcinol (powder). When 10% sodium hydroxide is added, polymerization occurs, which can form a brick hard red material that has no fully effective solvent. Retreating these cases is unpredictable because if you are lucky, in some cases the material in the canals may not be fully polymerized which can be removed easily. However in cases where fully polymerized resin is present, the material is brick hard and can be difficult or even impossible to remove.
