M FROG LABAT / TODD RUNDGREN’S UTOPIA: The first incarnation of Todd’s Utopia band featured three keyboard/synth players and Jean-Yves Labat was the “Eno” in that short lived version which recorded the killer first Utopia album in 1974. Known as “M Frog” (he’s French) he used a bunch of EMS Synthi’s to make noises and process the bands instruments. This must be a very early photo with him using three Synthi’s on a table as by the time they were touring he had a huge flying wing frame with six(!) Synthi’s, pitch to voltage converters and other treatment devices that can be partially seen on the back cover photo. You can hear his work clearly all over that album and Jean went on to record a solo album on Bearsville that’s kind of retro—electro-space rock. He used a graphical color chart approach to design his music which can be seen on that album. Look for it on streaming services for a unique musical treat.
