The Robber Fly A Fierce Predator Robber flies are a family of predatory insects known for their ferocious hunting behavior. They are found all over the world and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all share some common features. Robber flies are typically bristly and have a “moustache” of bristles on their face. This helps to protect them when they are attacking their prey. They also have a short, strong proboscis, which they use to stab and inject their victims with saliva. This saliva contains neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes, which paralyze and digest the insides of the victim. The robber fly can then suck the liquefied meal through its proboscis. Robber flies are ambush predators. They will often perch on a high branch or other vantage point and wait for their prey to come into view. Once they spot a victim, they will swoop down and attack with lightning speed. Robber flies are incredibly agile and can catch even the fastest flying insects. Robber flies play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to control populations of other insects.
