You got any games on your phone? We're celebrating BFFs today... black-footed ferrets. These hotdog-shaped mustelids were declared extinct in 1979. Just two years later, in 1981, a small population was discovered along the banks of the Greybull River in Wyoming. With the help of a captive breeding program and protections from the Endangered Species Act (ESA), this little ferret is making a comeback. Happy anniversary to the rediscovery of the BFF. The Endangered Species Act turns 50 years old this year! This important law has proven incredibly effective in stabilizing populations of species at risk, preventing the extinction of many others, and conserving the habitats upon which they depend. As we celebrate 50 years of the ESA in 2023, we honor this historic conservation law by taking a look back at some ESA success stories. It doesn't get better than the tale of the BFFs! #ESA50 #BFF Video filmed at the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center by USFWS
