The sex of sea turtle hatchlings is determined by the temperature of the sand in which their eggs are incubated. Warmer temperatures generally lead to more females, while cooler temperatures result in more males. 3. Sea turtles have an extraordinary ability to navigate across vast distances in the ocean. Some species, like the loggerhead turtle, can migrate thousands of miles across the ocean and return to their exact nesting beach. 4. After hatching, young sea turtles enter a phase known as the “lost years.” During this time, they roam the ocean for several years before returning to nearshore areas as juveniles. 5. Sea turtles have specialized glands near their eyes that allow them to excrete excess salt from their bodies.
