We are increasingly seeing more women coming into the clinic presenting with a ‘high-tone’ or ‘overactive’ pelvic floor. So what does it mean if you’re ‘pelvic floor is too tight’ in pregnancy? Just like any other muscle in the body, your pelvic floor should be able to contract and relax against resistance. Sometimes, we are constantly in a contracted state (this could be due to previous pelvic trauma, stress or other gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis) which means the muscle isn’t working efficiently. In order yo give birth vaginally, your pelvic floor muscles need to be able to stretch upto 3x more than usual. If there is reduced mobility in the muscle, it may mean we are more prone to a prolonged second stage, foetal distress and possible increased pelvic injury. 🎉The good news is that your pelvic floor can adapt to change with Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy during pregnancy. 🎉 If we can pick up early in your pregnancy then we have more time to work on down training and relaxing the muscles.
