It’s incredibly interesting how frequently staff members fall into leadership because they’re an expert teacher, not because they’re an expert leader. 👆🏼 and this isn’t a bad thing (it’s so important for good teachers to be recognised in this way), it’s just a damn wild time to be alive when it happens. As someone who is led by senior executive and as someone who leads a team of teachers, I (like to think that I) have a pretty good understanding of what it means to: • give and take direction (even when I don’t necessarily agree with it) • navigate an entire teaching day thinking about everyone other than myself • overthink what it means to be my authentic self vs what it means to be a professional • respond to new ideas when they’re bloody brilliant but perhaps too bold, or when there are no ideas and it’s my job to come up with one • forcefully overcome imposter syndrome — not because I’m good at it, just because there isn’t enough time in the day to entertain that version of myself • connect senior leaders with teachers, and the ideas of teachers with senior leaders • find just enough resilience to battle the tough conversations that are necessary for change. Now, for some people — this is a recipe for soaring, change making and celebrating. For me, this is a recipe for a fear of failure with a pinch of imposter syndrome 🫣. For some reason there is something in me that feels that fear and does it (all the things) anyway. The purpose of sharing this vulnerability is two part — with the hope that it allows humans to realise that SO many of us are building the bike as we ride it. And… that you don’t have to be that fierce, change making leader all of the time. It is okay to cancel the urgency. It’s okay to work harder on your wellbeing than you do on your resume… and it’s okay to remind whoever needs to hear it that you’re still learning too. • • • • • • • • • • #teachertips #teachertip #qotd #quoteoftheday #teacherlife #teachersofinstagram #classroomideas #teacherwellbeing #giftedandtalentedteacher
