Athens - National Archaeological Museum- Mycenae rich in gold The discovery of graves in 1876 by Heinrich Schleman starled the entire world with its momentous finds. It brought to light a great and hitherto unknown civilisation, and paved the way for the study of Greek prehistoric archaeology. The tombs contained a total of nineteen burials: nine males, eight females and two infants. The pottery finds indicate a range of dates from the 16th to the early 15th centuries BC. The amazing wealth of the grave gifts reveals the high social rank of the deceased: gold and silver jewellery and vases, elaborately decorated swords and other bronze objects, artefacts made of imported materials, such as amber, lapis lazuli, faïence and ostrich eggs and a small but characteristic group of pottery vessels, confirm Mycenae's importance during this period, and justify Homer's designation of Mycenae as 'rich in gold'. 1- Gold death-mask, known as the 'mask of Agamemnon'. This mask depicts the imposing face of a bearded man. It is made of a gold sheet with repousse details. Two holes near the ears indicate that the mask was held in place over the deceased's face with twine. 2- An impressive gold diadem with leaf-shaped pieces at the top; decorated with embossed circles 3- A unique gold covering for the body and the face of an infant, consisting of pieces of gold foil. A distinctive detail are the ring-shaped earrings. 3 top - An impressive gold diadem with repoussé rosettes and thin sheets applied at the top. 4- Gold roundels depicting whirls in repousse.
