Though separated by roughly 300 years, both Narsiso Martinez and Rembrandt invite us into the emotional landscape of their subjects. At @parallaxartcenter, Narsiso Martinez illuminates modern-day field workers with linocut prints on the surface of found produce boxes. The sensitively rendered portraits are juxtaposed with the box’s corporate insignias and air holes. "When people see my work, I hope they recognize... real people at the heart of food production.” Drawing from his personal history as a field worker, Martinez's art resonates with profound authenticity. Shift to the 17th century at the OJMCHE. Although not Jewish himself, Rembrandt portrayed Jews with sensitivity in his etchings. He fostered connections with the Sephardic Jews who had fled Spain and Portugal. He gathered insights from Jewish theologians for his Old Testament scenes and often used Jewish models. Despite the 300-year gap in their work, both Martinez and Rembrandt imbue their subjects with deep emotional resonance and humanity.
