DRIFTLESS GLEN RYE This is a bottle that I picked up in the US a few months ago and only getting around to opening it now. You know those bottles that you pick up, that you haven’t tried before, that you have read about and sounded decent but you are really taking a punt on? Well this was one of those and I do pick up many like it. Sometimes it works out well and others not so much. That’s all part of the fun right?! Driftless Glen Small Batch Rye Whiskey is created and blended from about twenty barrels, hand-selected by Driftless Glen distillers and blended together. Based in Wisconsin the water source nearby is quite unique. High Rye mash bill bottled at 48% ABV. So I cracked this open and boy what a surprise. NOSE Spearmint, damp wood, clove, marzipan and vanilla. PALATE Peppery rye spice bomb. Oily mouthfeel. Cinnamon, mint chocolate ice cream and caramel. FINISH Medium. Sweet Spearmint combined with that pepper spice, toffee and a little citrus. This is a stunning pour. The sweet mint blast is balanced so well with that explosion of spice. The caramel and chocolate add more depth. The cinnamon gives some extra bite. It’s a finish that you don’t want to end and it drinks real easy. This really has impressed me and is definitely a contender for my rye of the year so far.
