(swipe) I can not control the way you view me, your opinion of me, who you think I am…. But I can attempt to deflect your gaze, when I don’t know when you are looking at me. I have I hope a true intuitive approach to the subjects I want to paint and I wholeheartedly try not to pick apart the “why” and just trust the “want” instead. I have no idea who and when people are looking at me through a self portrait- Reflecting back on my self portraits, 90% of the time they feature a distraction- and the one I haven’t shared on this post made me feel unsettled whist painting and previously when sharing because this distraction was omitted. You’ll notice on each piece I have an accessory, like my glasses or a party hat… I want there to be what I consider a distraction or a veil of protection- I know you’ll be considering these things when you look at the paintings as opposed to solely focusing on the “me” part. However in real life of course I don’t wear the beautiful moustache and eyebrow combo, but neither do I like wearing my glasses or eye catching accessories because this would draw attention to the “me” …. In my way of thinking. Now I know people aren’t that interested in me or how I look etc, and won’t be considering these things when we meet, just as I don’t when I meet someone, however they are my thoughts and ways of creating my little suit of armour.
