Pierre Yantorny was an early 20th century shoemaker obsessed with creating the most beautiful, perfectly balanced, exquisitely crafted shoes possible. He described himself as 'the most expensive shoemaker in the world', and refused to advertise. Instead he agreed to make shoes only for a select clientele of women whose taste matched his own.⁠ ⁠ One of these was Rita de Acosta Lydig, a New York socialite known for arriving at the Ritz Paris with "a hairdresser, masseuse, chauffeur, secretary, maid,... and forty Louis Vuitton trunks." Included in her 40 trunks would have been part of her collection of almost 300 pairs of Yantorny shoes. ⁠ ⁠ Here are two pairs from her collection: one quite practical, and one made from the antique brocades and velvets de Acosta Lydig favoured in her shoes.
