On September 28, 1944, the B-17G Flying Fortress “Lost Angel” was hit by flak while on a bombing mission over Magdeburg, Germany, taking out both engines on one wing, and damaging the aircraft so badly that the tail gunner assumed the aircraft was fatally wounded and bailed out. The crew surprisingly managed to nurse the Fortress back to their base at Kimbolton only to find the main gear on the damaged side would not lower. After unbolting and dropping the ball turret to keep it from breaking the Fortress' back, they successfully belly-landed the bomber and saved the crew. The tail gunner was unfortunately captured and finished the war as a POW. Lost Angel was eventually repaired and returned to service, flying a total of 111 missions before finally being declared war weary.
