In celebration of Chuseok, our museum's collection of norigae have decided to come out! Norigae, which directly translates to “favourite thing,” are traditional Korean jewellery worn by women in hanbok. Hanging from the chest or waist, norigae are worn by women of all ages. The designs differed according to the occasion and season, and there are also special norigae women wear to celebrate rites of passage such as marriages. Norigae are made up of a ddidon (hook), maedup (knots), juche (ornament or charm), and sul (tassels). Crafted out of colourful silk or cotton material, norigae are typically decorated with symbolic knot patterns and embroidery that would represent prayers or aspirational virtues.  Norigae was most widely used during the Joseon period, as other ornaments were banned out of nonadherence to Confucian principles against vanity. Traditionally, norigae were also used practically, as women would attach small belongings to them like mirrors or perfume. They may have also attached silver spoons, which were commonly used to test for poison in foods, or embroidery needles to signify that a woman was skilled in embroidery, one of the highest virtues a woman could possess in the Joseon era. These norigae in our collection date back to the late 19th to 20th century. The different juche are made out of metal, amber, jade, wood, and embroidered silk.
