On September 29, 1940, an extraordinary mid-air collision occurred above Brocklesby, New South Wales, Australia. What made the collision between two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Avro Ansons from No. 2 Service Flying Training School extraordinary was that, after the collision, these aircraft remained physically connected and managed to land safely! The impact resulted in the upper Anson's engines being disabled, but the lower Anson's engines continued to operate, enabling both planes to remain airborne. Subsequently, the navigators and the pilot of the lower Anson decided to bail out. Meanwhile, the pilot of the upper Anson discovered that he could still exert control over the conjoined aircraft by manipulating the ailerons and flaps. This skillful maneuvering allowed him to execute an emergency landing in a nearby field. Remarkably, all four crew members survived the incident, and the upper Anson underwent repairs and was eventually returned to active flight service. The lower Anson became a training airframe.
