Personally, I started connecting to Sukkos in a much deeper way once I became an entrepreneur. Chazal (the Jewish Sages) refer to Sukkos as the holiday of emunah (faith). In the times of old, when a much higher percentage of people were farmers, Sukkos represented the time when we would have gather in the harvest and appreciate all the bracha (blessing) Hashem gave us. It was a way of recognizing that even though we need to put in all the work (Hishtadlus), everything comes from Hashem (Bitachon). However, for the modern Jewish entrepreneur or businessman, if your clientele is mostly Jewish, Sukkos now represents a very different form of emunah: Personally, when Elul comes around, I always have about a month where I pause my business coaching and consulting sessions, because all of us are busy with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkos. So for about a month, even though I’m still busy speaking and writing, I’m doing very little business. As such, instead of bringing in the harvest during Sukkos, I find myself at the one point in the year where I’m actually bringing in the very least amount of “harvest.” Sukkos therefore represents a different from of Emunah: that no matter what, Hashem will provide for me and my family.
