Tienen una mirada penetrante. Son niños. Estudian dentro de una pequeña habitación de adobe en una escuela rural de Surqul, en las afueras de Bamiyán, una provincia en el centro de Afganistán. La maestra me cuenta que la situación de la escuela es dramática , que la ONG que financiaba este establecimiento alejado del centro urbano ya se fue del país y dejó de aportar dinero. También me contó que por suerte por ahora las mujeres pueden asistir a la escuela primaria, ya que los talibanes les prohibieron estudiar la secundaria hace más de un año. Si esta pequeña escuela cierra, los niños deberán volver a caminar un largo tramo de calles de tierra hasta la ciudad, en un lugar donde en invierno se acumulan metros de nieve. Después nos asombramos al ver a miles de afganos jóvenes migrando a Europa o a países vecinos cargando una pequeña mochila en sus hombros. ¿Qué futuro les espera? # They have a penetrating look. The teacher tells me that the situation at the school is dramatic, the NGO that financed this establishment far from the urban center has already left the country and stopped contributing money. She also told that luckily, for now, women can attend primary school, since the Taliban prohibited them from studying secondary school more than a year ago. If this small school closes, these children will once again have to walk a long stretch of dirt streets to the city, in a place where meters of snow accumulates in the heavy winter. Later we will be amazed to see thousands of young Afghans migrating to Europe or neighboring countries carrying a small backpack on their shoulders.
