Dom Spotkań z Historią zainaugurował swoją działalność jako miejska instytucja kultury 1 marca 2006 roku. Naszą misją jest umożliwianie międzypokoleniowego i międzynarodowego kontaktu ze świadectwami historii Polski i Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej w XX w. Działamy na bazie zasobów źródłowych gromadzonych przez Ośrodek KARTA, szeroko otwieramy się też na inne organizacje i środowiska, zajmujące się historią najnowszą. Wśród naszych strategicznych partnerów wymienić możemy: Instytut Pamięci Narodowej; Instytut Studiów Politycznych PAN; Instytut Polski i Muzeum im. gen. Sikorskiego w Londynie; Ośrodek Badań, Informacji i Upowszechniania Memoriał w Moskwie, Instytut Badań nad Totalitaryzmem im. Hannah Arendt w Dreźnie, Fundację Körbera w Hamburgu.
