As we edge closer to the Athletics World Championships in Paris, and I start thinking about potential outcomes, what I come to think about is what success actually means to me. Is it a gold medal? A personal best? Or is it something completely different? Sure, my goal is to be the best athlete I can be on the day and show what I've been training so hard for. Of course, winning medals is a great reward for the sacrifices we have made along the way and the hard work we have put in. But does a medal really equal success? I think "intention" becomes really important when it comes to talking about what success means to me. Intentions are about the internals (our why), not so much about the external rewards (and goals that are often outside our control - like medals, for example). They are based on our passion, values, and purpose, the bigger picture of why we do anything really. Paralympic sport helps people understand that we aren't defined by what happens to us or the cards we've been dealt in life, but by the choices we make, the responsibility we take over our own lives, and the way we show up. And that's my why, my intention, the reason why I do what I do. I love this sport, and it has helped me understand so much about myself. I know it has the power to inspire so many people out there, whether they have a disability or not, to live their lives to the fullest.
