‘Rummy’ I was living in Bogota, Colombia when Rummy found me. I was killing time reading in a park before I had to go teach my last class of the day. He approached me and simply sat in front of me, staring gently but insistently. His eyes were so soft and sweet, despite an apparent infection. He was so thin. He had some minor wounds and scars on his legs, and chewing gum stuck to his fur. I pet him a few times but didn't have anything else to offer him. He decided to stay with me anyway, curling right up to take a nap. Maybe 20-30 minutes later I decided to get up and walk through the nearby market. He came with me, following so closely that people were commenting about my "perro tiernito." After a few rounds I decided he deserved a snack, so I bought him an empanada and left it on the ground. As he ate, I walked away, making it several blocks ahead before he caught up with me. I went back to the park, where I tried leaving him again when he fell asleep - each time, he got up and found me. He ended up following me 10 blocks to my class. It was when I walked out of the building 2 hours later, and he was still patiently waiting for me on the steps, that I knew he was coming with me. I managed to find a bus driver who didn’t mind my bringing the dog aboard. He curled right up in my lap and slept. I wasn't in a place to have a pet - I was renting a tiny apartment, I didn't have much money, and I was barely taking care of myself. I decided I’d try bringing him to a nearby vet and shelter I’d seen in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, the vet had no space. She encouraged me to keep the dog, promising me discounted services and supplies. The vet, and everyone I knew or encountered, marveled at this connection Rummy seemed to have with me. I didn’t even use a leash (since I didn’t have one) for our first days together.
