I grew up listening to Tony Bennett. My parent’s worshipped him. Many a swish Scarborough dinner party was soundtracked by his timeless crooning and romantic song stylings. His music was ingrained in my family’s culture. My life changed dramatically when I met Elton and was ushered into the heady world of popular music. I met so many icons and Tony Bennett was without question the most down-to-earth. They say never meet your idols, but Tony was a major exception to that rule. He was charm personified - and his beautiful wife Susan was equally warm, classy and kind. Tony performed as a surprise guest at Elton’s 60th birthday at St John The Divine Cathedral in New York City. He graced the stage alongside Mary J Blige and the Scissor Sisters. What an incredible night that was! All the arrangements for Tony were seamless and elegantly handled by his son and manager Danny. Clearly the apple didn’t fall very far from the tree in the Bennett family. A few years later, I was having dinner at Scott’s Restaurant in London, and my meal was interrupted by a waiter bringing me a napkin on a silver tray. On it was a drawing of me by Tony, who was sitting across the room dining with Susan. That was Tony’s way of saying hello. Not only was he a brilliant singer, he was a passionate painter. I can’t imagine a world without Tony Bennett. And thanks to his magnificent catalogue, a part of him will always live on forever.
