Believe it or not, this marble skirting was completely unplanned. When turning this room into our bathroom earlier this year, one of the (many) issues I ran into had to do with the skirting. This room didn’t have any so I planned to use salvaged pieces of the original, two-layer timber skirting (which you can see in the first two images) we have in the adjacent bedroom and in the sitting rooms downstairs. We saved all the pieces that had been removed during the renovations and I was convinced it would be enough. It wasn’t. Time was running out and I couldn’t find any timber skirting that would even remotely match the original. There was no time (or money) to have it custom made. Plus, because I love to make things super simple, I was planning to whitewash the skirting as I’ve done throughout the house and new pine just doesn’t whitewash as well as old. This was going to be an elegant room and I wanted skirting to match. So I sulked for a bit. Then I had an idea. I asked my amazing stone fabricators @pgqworktops if maybe, just maybe there might be enough marble leftover from the slabs we’d purchased to make the skirting out of marble. There was ✨ Luke @pgqworktops spent a few hours perfecting the strips on site (cutting and grinding in the van); each piece had to be made to fit the adjacent ones and our uneven, 140-year-old floor. We decided to retain the Victorian skirting on the wall adjacent to the bedroom as I couldn’t stand not to use it and I think it brings a lovely warmth and connection to the bedroom. Everywhere else, we have - somehow! - marble skirting. Completely unplanned but one of my favourite parts of the whole house. Sometimes the best bits just fall into place!
