Bassline of the week #24. This week is Willie “Little Beaver” Hale’s “I Can Dig It” from his album “Party Down” and that’s the most quotation marks I’ve ever used in a sentence. I found some conflicting info online regarding the release date, some sources say 1974 & some say 1975, can anyone clarify? Thanks to my man @kamaalwilliams for the request this week. The player on this cut is the inimitable Jaco Pastorius. Jaco is undeniably one of the most important musicians to play the bass guitar and he is one of my personal favorite bassists. Although I don’t always play in his style, I consider Jaco to be my biggest influence on the bass guitar. His playing came to me early in my time with the bass. I was immediately enamored with his playing and it has held up for me over the years more so than any other player I was into at a young age. Interestingly, Jaco is credited under a pseudonym on this record: Nelson “Jocko” Padron. Anyone know why? There’s all of one paragraph dedicated to the Little Beaver collab in Jaco’s biography by Bill Milkowski. It states that Jaco went into the studio in late spring of 1974 to record this. Hale was a veteran of the Miami scene and had played on Betty Wright’s “Clean-Up Woman” one of Jaco’s favorite songs from his CC Riders days. The line itself is a classic Jaco-ism. Jaco had a few signature basslines that he would often recycle for multiple songs. This groove here can also be heard in the B section of Jaco’s tune, “Opus Pocus” and a very similar groove can be heard on “Kuru/Speak Like a Child”. I remember when I was a young gent thinking it was peculiar how he recycled basslines instead of always writing unique lines for every song. Twenty years into the game and I now think it’s really hip and sort of an “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” kind of thing which I feel alines with Jaco’s energy. What are some of your favorite Jaco-isms? Who are some other bass players with signature lines? What would y’all like to hear next? 😎 Cheers, Randazzo #bass #basslines #jaco #littlebeaver #icandigitbaby #jacopastorius #bassofdoom #fenderjazzbass #miami #bienvenidos #tight #welcome #thx
