this week is world breastfeeding week and I wanted to share a little bit about my journey for other mamas, expecting mamas, dads, and the public. i am so grateful that my body has allowed me to exclusively breastfeed for the past 7 months, but man it wasn’t easy. i remember, not even 24 hours after my son was born, the nurses in L&D told me the following: “If you don’t supplement to feed your baby, he’s going to end up in the NICU.” “If your baby doesn’t have another soiled diaper, you won’t be able to leave the hospital, we recommend supplementing.” Their qualified lactation consultant told me: “It’s standard to give your newborn 3-4oz of formula to supplement, so you can leave the hospital.” (which by the way is horrible advice as a newborn stomach cannot hold that much nor should it, it can create obesity problems in the future) A new nurse told me: “I’d recommend just giving the formula, so they let you leave.” they didn’t offer me donor milk, they forced similac down my throat because the hospital had a contract with them and they could charge me up the wall, they threatened me with my child ending up in the NICU if I didn’t supplement, and all i could do was advocate for myself, grabbed the cleanest formula my husband could find at the store on such short notice to get the hell out of there. once we left, I had a lactation consultation come to my house to help with latch, tongue ties, and sizing for my pump. i pumped every single hour after feeds to increase my supply that first month, i worked on our latch, I used nipple butter and silverettes 24/7, i cried lots of tears, i realized that my body doesn’t make any oversupply and that it makes the exact amount that my little guy needs, i made it work and let my body do what it needed to do. we’ve been going strong for 7 months & I won’t lie and tell you that it’s been perfect - it can be exhausting, but it’s worth it. it’s known as liquid gold for a reason - endless benefits! if you breastfed or pumped i’d love to hear your story. #backoffbobbie #breastfedbaby #breastfeedingmom #breastfeedwithoutfear #breastfeedingmama #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedinginpublic #liquidgold
