On the roof of Forez in Auvergne, the Hautes Chaumes plateau stretches as far as the eye can see. The white stony track visually cuts the landscape in two, taking you through this formidable landscape of heather, wild blueberries and scattered rock formations. With looks of Mongolian steppes or Scottish highlands, it's a complete change of scenery. After a long ascent by bike, the wonder is as great as the weight of local cheese swallowed at the top.
