Rodney became the largest port town between New Orleans and St. Louis on the Mississippi River, has been abandoned for nearly a century. By 1830, Rodney was a booming town, thanks to the Mississippi River. In 1843, Rodney was to suffer through a severe epidemic of yellow fever. It was so devastating that the outbreak was reported in national newspapers. However, that wasn’t the end for Rodney. Within the next decade, the town quadrupled its size to 4,000 residents. Its main business streets, Commerce and Magnolia, were lined with businesses including banks, wagon makers, tinsmiths, barbers, doctors, dentists, general mercantile stores, hotels, saloons, and pastry shops. Mississippi Lodge #56 of the Free and Accepted Masons was located in Rodney from the 1850s until the 1920s.
