This photo was taken in 2013, and by this point the WRC Mexico organizers knew what to expect. But in 2010, when a “Shoe Tycoon Turned Rally Racer” showed up to compete in his first ever round of WRC level competition, it was pure pandemonium. The Mexican fans swarmed the bicycle fence outside of the Monster World Rally Team service area as we approached with a stack of full-sized posters, on quality stock paper, complete with a white border, to make them easier to frame--a requirement KB spec’d for all his event posters. It took about 10 staffers and another 10 policia to keep the fence from tipping over. The other teams looked confused. Block was no where near the pace of drivers like Loeb, but Loeb’s crowd was no where near the size of Block’s. That night, I dubbed Ken the “People’s Champ.” He was never the fastest on the world stage, but he’d always sign autographs for the longest, or throw an extra spicy slide through the spectator areas even if it cost a tenth of a second, to continue to secure that top spot with the fans.
