Last Spring Piper and I woke together snuggling as we always do in the morning. Talking about our day ahead. And then out of the blue, she said, I’m too old now mama, I’m not going to have boobie anymore okay? I held her little head to my chest, and I cried silent tears down my face, saying: “Of course my love, thank you, thank you, thank you. I am so proud of you, we did a good job Pippi.” And that was that. It was over. 7 1/2 years of being tethered to another person. A total of 11 1/2 years of breastfeeding three kids had come to a close that morning, and as I climbed out of bed and stepped into the shower I felt as if I was suppose to say something to myself, my body, but I could’t really find the words ya know? Like what a trip it has all been. I had never planned to share about extended breastfeeding on the Internet, but as she got older I began to see less and less photos of older children nursing and thought why the hell not normalize it for other people. Let them see the reality, why hide. I’ve never been someone who hides anyways. I ended up going viral in other counties multiple times, including making it on a tabloid, in the news, and even receiving death threats. Which I could give two fucks about of course. But, our pictures also made it into a book by a wonderful artist, on a podcast, and even a museum display in Germany. So, yeah. Extended breastfeeding is just a variation of normal. There are no rules because we make the rules for our babies and our bodies. You don’t need the WHO or your shitty pediatrician or anyone else to tell you how long to breastfeed your baby for. You know the way. Best advice I could ever give you is if you’re going to cover anything at all—make it your ears!
