Don’t push when baby’s head is crowning. Why? You want to slooooow things down to give your perineal tissues time to stretch as baby is passing through. Fast crowning often results in more tearing as your tissue doesn’t have as much time to stretch. Pushing is like the gas pedal. Panting is like the brake. Try this. Start bearing down like you’re really constipated. Then start panting “hee hee haaa haaa”. You feel that? You can’t bear down and pant at the same time.
