Today we celebrate left-handed people. Previous generations viewed left-handedness negatively, dating back to the Middle Ages when lefties were thought to be possessed by the devil, practised witchcraft, or were associated with crime. Left-handed people were seen as 'sinister' which literally derives from the Latin word for left (sinistra). === It was a feature that was repressed for a long time. No left-handed products were available. Ask your parents or grandparents, left-handed children in the 20th century were still obliged by their parents and school teachers to use their right hand for writing, household tasks and sports. === It has been researched that a complex interaction of genetic and environmental influences determines right or left-hand preference. Still, scientists don't know how these interactions work yet. What is known is that there is a difference in the activity in the separate hemispheres of the brain. === Almost 10% of the world's population is left-handed. Left-Handers had to adapt for a long time. There are a lot of advantages; for example, left-handers are said to be more creative, process information faster and are better in ball sports. === 📷 Pictured here: left hand missing the upper phalanges, coll.
