the august pigment is called MILL TOWN. it’s a glorious soft bright red iron oxide made from a very familiar rock ( of sorts ) that can be found in nearly every urban environment: bricks. red bricks were once yellow clay. yellow hydrous iron oxide baked in an oven = red anhydrous iron oxide ( aka red ochre…) bricks are a gorgeous source of ochre because their secret is you can almost always find pieces of them lying around, & they’re subtly different from place to place. i could say a ton more about the magic of bricks as pigment but what i really want to do here is extoll this month’s contributor…none other than my long-time collaborator, @prayersforwhatis. noel is exceptional at everything he touches. he’s a clothing designer who drafts patterns in his sleep, a veritable garment xeroxer, & a weaver in love with the riddles of loom reconstruction. he writes like clear stream water running over pebbles. he is a tender guide for souls seeking expression & authenticity through cloth. cloth & cloth history — dye plants, cloth plants, loom bodies — are very dear to his heart. these days, he’s perched in the cradle of cloth that is the @marshfieldschoolofweaving, ushering in new cloths with nimble fingers & preparing to teach a course on making wool jackets with cloth you weave ( currently sold out…). his hands manifest so much unbearable beauty: go get a glimpse at his feed, for a start… noel is directing this month’s 22% to @nefoclandtrust, “Black, Indigenous, Latin, Asian & POC land stewards, earthworkers, & farmers united to liberate & celebrate ancestral land-based practice” on lands where noel gathered the MILL TOWN bricks. pictured here: MILL TOWN, noel with goat, & noel wrapped in ceremonial garb cloth he wove with ochre-dyed yarns for @heidilynnheidilynn, plus the last pic, a shirt he designed, wove, & tailored for heidi. MILL TOWN has already shipped, but DM here if you need one & we’ll get it out to you! ✨ all my love & gratitude to @prayersforwhatis for this & all our collaborations🧡 #ochre #bricks #groundbright #wildpigments #urbanpigments #naturalpigments #wastestream #weaving #naturaldyes #handsewing #looms #goats
