NAVHDA Breed of the Week no. 14: German Wirehair Pointer Country of Origin: Germany Number Registered with NAVHDA: 15,688 Height: 22-26 inches Weight: 50-70 pounds The German Wirehaired Pointer was developed in the 19th century in Germany for hunting all types of game, and was the leading gun dog in Germany during most of the 20th century. It was developed from a variety of breeds including the Griffon, the German Shorthaired Pointer, the Deutsch Stichelhaar, and the Pudelpointer. German Wirehaired Pointers are intelligent and resilient hunting companions, and their dense wire coat protects them from thorny underbrush, cold water, and harsh weather. They are currently the second most popular breed in NAVHDA, and were the most frequently – tested dogs during NAVHDA’s formative years. Do you have a German Wirehair?
