40 Years These two photos were taken almost exactly 40 years apart. The first one captures Hellhammer during the band's first photo shoot, in the village of Birchwil, Switzerland, on 1 January 1983 (from left: Steve Warrior, Bruce Day, and the author of this blog). It was taken by Martin Kyburz, who had become my friend as we both attended the same place of apprenticeship, him as a precision mechanic in training and me as an aspiring machine mechanic. Birchwil, part of the rural community of Nurensdorf, was where Hellhammer rehearsed in an unoccupied cold war nuclear bunker. Steve Warrior is seen with his main bass in Hellhammer, an Ibanez Destroyer II, and I am holding my first flying-V guitar, a modified Vantage FV575. At 19 years of age, I was the oldest member of Hellhammer. The second photo shows Triumph Of Death, the band formed to pay tribute to Hellhammer's music, written these inconceivable 40 years ago and never performed on stage during the two years Hellhammer existed. It was photographed by Roland Moeck at Sihlfeld cemetery in Zurich, Switzerland, on 5 February 2023 (from left: Tim Iso Wey, André Mathieu, the author of this blog, and Jamie Lee Cussigh). Unsurprisingly, I am also the oldest member of Triumph Of Death.
