Eighteen year-old Robert B. Hurt, Jr. at the time of his enlistment as a private in Company H “Southern Guards,” 6th Tennessee Infantry, in Jackson, TN, May 1861. For unknown reasons he would transfer to R. P. Ford’s company of the 55th Tennessee, also organized in Jackson, on March 10, 1862, and be captured with the rest of the regiment at Island No. 10 a month later. The unit was paroled in Vicksburg on September 20, 1862 and consolidated with the 46th Tennessee in Port Hudson, LA in January 1863. Hurt became adjutant of the regiment in May of that year. The 46th/55th would eventually join the Army of Tennessee prior to the Atlanta campaign and suffer heavy losses at Ezra Church on July 28, 1864. Following the army’s retreat to his home state of Tennessee, the young adjutant’s luck ran out. He fell with his commanding officer Maj. Joseph E. McDonald and the bulk of the regiment at Franklin as it assaulted the federal works with Quarles’ brigade on November 30, 1864.
