While still in Ghana honoring the ancestors, one of my God-Grandmothers became one. Mrs. Ivory Collins Shepherd was my first oratorical coach, my first homiletics professor, a spiritual advisor, and a bonus grandmother. As a young aspiring young preacher growing up at The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church, she took time to help set my feet on a path to walk closer to Jesus. She was the First Lady for 47 years and served beside Rev. Hubert Floyd Shepherd with a spirit of love, kindness, creativity, and grace. She was a “Woman-King”!! As long as I am alive, I’ll carry her spirit and wisdom with me. When you see me and hear me, you are witnessing the results of a Black Woman who believed in a little Black boy to become all God destined for him to be. She was an Angel and an Answer for me. A few lessons Mrs. Shepherd taught me: 1. At the age of 16, when I began to doubt my call. She said, “You know that you are called by God when your community of faith affirms your call. People will not continue to call you to preach if they don’t sense God is working in you.” 2. “We each have a destiny no one goes his way alone and all that we give into the lives of others eventually comes back into our own.” - Author Unknown 3. Every child is a new thought from God. 4. When you stand to preach, smile and let the people know how excited you are that they have given you a chance to share God’s word. 5. When someone is difficult, remember, - “That which you dislike in another person, correct it within yourself.” 6. She closed every public address with these words, “To God be the Glory for the things He has done.” 7. She told me that her and Reverend Shepherd would always tell each other that when they passed and made it to heaven that they would “meet each other at the fountain”. Reverend Shepherd is waiting for you at the fountain Grandma Shepherd. Jesus will walk you over to where he is… I‘ll love you forever and always. Kiss all my people up there when you see them. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I love you. ❤️ Please join me in praying for The Shepherd Family and our House of Hope Atlanta Family🙏🏿 #PeacePeace
