As they list the names of those we’ve lost, the days start to feel like a punch in the gut. The grief is overwhelming at times, sometimes it’s for the Lāhainā we knew, sometimes it’s for the people we knew, sometimes it’s for what will never be again. Lazy Lāhainā summers for my keiki, hanging with their cousins, cruising front street, playing doo doo ball late into the nights at tūtū house until the neighbors complained 😅, getting together with ‘ohana at all the different hale for all the different occasions, late nights under the stars listening to the sweet sounds of whoever is playing music. While there is a future for Lāhainā & I have faith in the ‘ohana who have taken charge, the days will never be the same. The grief and trauma will remain. There won’t be much for relaxed days and nights for a long while, and when that time comes my keiki will be older & the Lāhainā summers of their childhood will be missed. I feel so appreciative of everyone who has reached out, who has leant a hand, everyone who has donated their time or resources in whatever capacity that was. I am appreciative of the small businesses doing what they can in this moment. Every single minute of your time and effort will help the future of Lāhainā. You know your intentions. Mahalo. I am sorry for not speaking about upcountry more, what is happening there is so tragic and needs full attention, but in this moment I am full of grief.
